7 Days Rongai Route

Overview

The 7 Days Rongai Route is one of the quietest and most scenic routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the northern side near the Kenyan border, this route offers a unique wilderness experience with fewer crowds, making it ideal for trekkers seeking tranquility and spectacular mountain views. The gradual ascent allows for better acclimatization, increasing the chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) successfully.

Throughout the trek, you’ll pass through lush forests, open moorlands, alpine deserts, and the dramatic arctic summit zone before descending via the Marangu Route. Accompanied by experienced mountain guides, skilled porters, and dedicated cooks, you’ll enjoy a safe, well-organized, and unforgettable adventure to the Roof of Africa.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,625m)

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate, where registration and a briefing are completed before starting the trek. The trail winds through beautiful montane forests where you may spot colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species. The gentle ascent makes for a comfortable first day while introducing you to Kilimanjaro’s unique ecosystem. Upon arrival at Simba Camp, enjoy dinner and relax under the clear African sky.

Destination: Simba Camp

After breakfast, continue hiking through open moorland with spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding wilderness. The trail becomes more open, revealing dramatic landscapes and unique alpine vegetation. This gradual climb allows your body to adapt to the increasing altitude while offering excellent opportunities for photography and wildlife observation.

Destination: Second Cave Camp

Today’s trek leads across rolling moorlands before gradually climbing toward Kikelewa Camp. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak, one of Kilimanjaro’s most striking volcanic cones. The peaceful surroundings and relatively short hiking distance provide excellent conditions for acclimatization and rest.

Destination: Kikelewa Camp

The trail becomes steeper as you ascend into the alpine desert zone. Upon reaching Mawenzi Tarn Camp, you’ll be surrounded by towering volcanic cliffs and spectacular mountain scenery. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing, helping your body prepare for the summit attempt while enjoying one of the most beautiful camps on Kilimanjaro.

Destination: Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Today’s hike crosses the vast lunar-like Saddle, a dramatic alpine desert stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Although the terrain is relatively gentle, the high altitude requires a slow and steady pace. Arriving at Kibo Hut in the afternoon allows time to rest, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit ascent.

Destination: Kibo Hut

Around midnight, begin your summit attempt under a sky filled with stars. Trek steadily to Gilman’s Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate this incredible achievement while watching a breathtaking sunrise over the continent. After taking photos and enjoying the moment, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut for an overnight stay.

Destination: Horombo Hut

After breakfast, descend through beautiful heathland and lush rainforest, enjoying the final views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi, where your unforgettable trekking adventure comes to an end.
